INSPIRING DESIGNS

A VERSATILE ARCHITECTURAL TEAM

After originally being commissioned to design a front fence to complement a yet-to-be-built dream home on this property, the clients were so impressed they engaged Shane Denman Architects to design the home as well. Seeking low-maintenance finishes, a slightly industrial aesthetic, dramatic street appeal and open-plan living with seamless access from internal to external areas, the clients requested that Shane Denman make the most of the river views, offer separate parents’ and children’s retreats, and design a bridge link over the two-storey entry void to provide privacy to the guest suite.

The clients selected Gino Pase from Pase Builders to construct the design. Committed to the integrity of the project, together they were able to complete the home on time and budget and with a high quality finish. A striking combination of materials was used internally and externally to great effect. Polished concrete floors, off-form concrete ceilings, face blockwork walls and spotted gum vertical shiplap cladding combine to create a dramatic look that is low-fuss and easily maintained. Mature trees needed to be retained and posed a design challenge that was overcome, while a host of environmentally-friendly features was also incorporated into the home.

To really capture the best of the elements, a large glass skylight allows light into the centre of the house, and natural cross ventilation is encouraged via large banks of strategically placed glass louvres, ensuring minimal use of air-conditioning units.

Rainwater harvesting tanks have been incorporated and are used for non-potable water in the house and garden.

Since establishing the company in 2000, director Shane Denman has received various architectural awards. Specialising in all types of architecture, including residential, multi-residential, commercial, industrial, hospitality, wineries, interior design, master planning and conceptual design, the business works with clients primarily on the Gold Coast, but has also completed projects in Brisbane, Mount Cotton, Hervey Bay, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
