ABOVE THE TREETOPS A MAGNIFICENT DESIGN FEAT There is truly no challenge too big for the capable team at D Pearce Constructions. This incredible home is located in the private and exclusive ‘Treetops On Birdwood’ enclave; the only large lot development within five kilometres of the Brisbane CBD. The client’s brief was straightforward yet compelling: to create the most spectacular house for the most spectacular location. Having seen examples of houses completed by the company’s proprietor, Duayne Pearce, the client was confident that D Pearce Constructions could complete the project to the highest quality, and, importantly, on budget. Surrounded by bushland, the house has been built on a 45-degree slope and is one of only 14 homes to be built within the eight-acre ‘Treetops On Birdwood’. Faced with an imposing construction challenge, D Pearce Constructions created a truly unforgettable home. The multi-million dollar property has views of up to 100 kilometres on a clear day over bushland to the Brisbane CBD, to Tamborine Mountain, and to the McPherson Ranges on the Queensland/New South Wales border. The amazing concreted infinity-edge pool is suspended ten metres in the air and is a one-of-akind design triumph. The luxurious contemporary design was influenced by one of the owner’s favourite resorts, The Banyan Tree, and features frameless glass balustrading to the internal stairs and pool area, and flexible living spaces – the design effortlessly fuses the separate living and entertaining areas, parents’ retreat, office, and children’s and guest areas – most of which are interchangeable simply by moving the furniture. In addition to its stunning design, another impressive contemporary feature was incorporated into the house – it is programmed so the stereo, TVs, media room and garage door can be operated from the owner’s iPhone or iPad. Built to budget, the home exceeded the client’s expectations of quality and workmanship, and he is thrilled with his unique home. Duayne and his team of subcontractors met with the owner often to find solutions to the unique challenges of this project. Due to the extreme slope of the site, the job required skilled machine operators and subcontractors. Initial design work was by ARTAS Architects, and additional design work with 3D rendering to produce detailed working drawings was completed by John Cunningham of Cunningham Designs. Once the design was in place, D Pearce Constructions brought it to life. The major challenge faced during construction was designing the steel structure to support the cantilevered part of the house. This was achieved by designing two reinforced concrete columns to support the two sides of the house separated by the infinity-edge pool, which is in turn supported by four concrete columns. With a 100,000-litre concrete water tank underneath the garage floor, an environmentally-friendly Heatpump hot water system ready for solar pool heating and solar panels if required, and complete insulation (there is a wool blanket in the ceiling and under the roof sheeting), the home also boasts impressive energy-saving credentials. Brisbane-based D Pearce Constructions is an award-winning specialist builder of new homes, as well as renovations. Owner Duayne Pearce’s passion for perfection means he has formed close relationships with his subcontractors and suppliers to create a professional team that takes pride in its quality of workmanship. Duayne oversees all facets of each project, ensuring the highest possible standards are achieved. Among the company’s various awards is the 2010 Queensland Master Builders Association (MBA) Rising Star Award.
