BUILDING CLASSIC QUEENSLAND HOMES Since Chris Freeman and Steven Reid began Unique Country Homes in early 2006, the company has grown steadily. Bringing a range of experience from their different backgrounds – carpentry, management and design and sales – they developed a successful business that specialises in building Queenslander-style housing. As every home they build is designed to suit each specific block, their homes truly are unique. From humble beginnings in a home office, they now occupy large premises in Helensvale and have expanded the business to include Unique City Homes. In doing this, they offer traditional country homes and contemporary designs. With five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a study, open-plan living, stunning views to the Gold Coast from every room, big verandas on both levels and various locations for entertaining, the pictured home is a stunning example of what Unique Country Homes can do. Designed in a classic heritage-style created specifically for the steep sloping block, the house was built to keep as close as possible to the landowners’ original sketch. Steven Reid from Unique Country Homes designed the home with the sketch in mind and incorporated a range of outstanding features. The house has its own water supply from three 4000 gallon rainwater tanks and also boasts a wastewater treatment system. Spanning a massive 650m², it has Weathertex external cladding, a ColorBond roof, and spotted gum timber flooring on both levels and the internal staircase. Energy efficient downlights and chandeliers were installed, and Dulux paint, selected for the owners’ colour scheme, was also used. Landscaping is comprised of more than 2000 plants put in by the owner. Building ten to 15 homes each year, the company has won several awards, including 2008 Individual Design $331,000–$440,000 and $401,000–$700,000; and 2010 Best Heritage Home Unlimited Value (Gold Coast Region) and 2010 Best Heritage Home Unlimited Value (State of Queensland).
